PAUL, Minn. — The first-place votes in the 2010 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Preseason Coaches' Poll were split almost evenly among three teams, with Macalester edging out St. Thomas and Carleton as the favorite to claim the regular season crown. However, only 38 points separate the Scots and eighth-place Concordia, which points towards a season of incredible parity in the MIAC.

WINONA, Minn. — Like every other year, Saint Mary's University men's soccer coach Chris Dembiec finds himself trying to fit all the pieces together as he gets his Cardinals set for their Sept. 1 season opener against Marian. Unlike the past three seasons, however, Dembiec's puzzle is missing one major piece. For the first time since 2006, Jon Szafranski will no longer be between the pipes.

WINONA, Minn. — For the third straight year, #Jon Szafranski# (Barrington, Ill.) proved to be the backbone of the Saint Mary’s University men’s soccer team, as the senior goalkeeper closed out an illustrious Cardinal career by becoming SMU’s all-time career saves leader. Thursday afternoon, Szafranski was again honored for his efforts, being named honorable-mention All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for the second year in a row.

Athletes of the Week
Andrew Warren
Baseball
Warren hit a team-leading .435 in the Cardinals' seven games last week, collecting 10 hits in 23 at-bats. He also scored five times and drove in three runs as SMU went 3-4 in its seven contests last week. The junior left-fielder finished with 11 total bases an a .478 slugging percentage. He also made 56 putouts with three assists defensively.
Erin Stenseth
Softball
Stenseth hit .467 in the Cardinals' eight games last week, collecting 14 hits — including four doubles — in 30 at-bats. The SMU freshman, who also scored five runs and drove in seven, boasted a .600 slugging percentage and a .484 on-base percentage, while making seven putouts in left field.

Sarah Gardner collected 17 kills Wednesday evening vs. Viterbo, giving the SMU senior 1,007 kills for her career. She is the 10th player in SMU volleyball history to eclipse the 1,000 career kills mark.
