GRINNELL, Iowa — All season long, Saint Mary's University freshman
Peter Borash (Bowlus, Minn.) has been running in the shadow sophomore
David Feather (Oak Creek, Wis.)
Heading into Saturday's NCAA Central Regional, Feather had been the first Cardinal runner across the finish line in each and every race — with Borash always close behind.
At the season-ending regional, however, it was Borash who took the lead, posting a career-best eight-kilometer time of 27:05 to lead the Cardinal men to a 19th-place finish in the 25-team field. On the women's side,
Rachel Folan (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) once again led the Cardinals' charge, stopping the clock in 24:08 in helping SMU to a 22nd-place finish among the 26 regional teams.
St. Thomas and Nebraska Wesleyan finished tied for first in the men's overall standings with 116 points, while St. Olaf was one point back in third at 117. Bethel's Daniel Greeno won the individual title, clocking a time of 24:29. Carleton earned the women's team title, outdistancing Nebraska Wesleyan by four points (95-99).
“It was a very good day for us,” said SMU coach
Ward Berndt. “I was very happy with the way everyone performed — top-to-bottom. To go out in a race like this have eight lifetime PRs between the two teams, that's outstanding.”
Along with Borash's 27:05, the Cardinals also got a 27:46 from Feather, a 27:51 from
Robby McGuire (Rochester, Minn.), a 28:03 from
Ben Carlson (Rosemount, Minn.), and a 28:05 from
John Vallez (Eagan, Minn.).
“It was a tough regional this year — everyone ran faster than a year ago, including ourselves,” Berndt said. “We certainly ended the season on a high note.”
