NORTHFIELD, Minn. — If their performance Friday evening at the Ole Qualifier — the final tune-up before next weekend's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships — the Saint Mary's University track and field teams are finely-tuned machines.
The Cardinals got first-place efforts from
Andrew Brueggen (Holmen, Wis.) and
Teri Heinzen (Marshfield, Wis.), not to mention several top 10 finishes, in their last meet before the indoor season-ending conference championships.
Brueggen, who has already automatically qualified for the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships in the weight throw, continued his dominance in the event, winning Friday's weight throw with a toss of 18.23 meters — more than two meters further than any other competitor.
Heinzen, meanwhile, picked up her first-place finish in the long jump, uncorking a winning leap of 5.12 meters, while also placing fourth in the 200 (26.41).
Josiah Ryks (Austin, Minn.) chipped in a fourth-place finish in 400 (51.20), while
John Kelly (Rochester, Minn.) was fifth in the 55 (6.66) and
Derek Wherley (Missoula, Mont.) was sixth in the weight throw (14.41 meters).
Sabrina Larson-Bushlack collected a fourth in the high jump (1.49 meters), with
Sara Harstad (Chatfield, Minn.) recording a fifth in the weight throw (14.72 meters) and
Ashley Acosta (Winnebago, Minn.) racing to sixth in the 800 (2:30.14).
