MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The Saint Mary’s University men’s hockey team, which gave up a pair of goals in the third period in falling to Augsburg 5-4 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at the SMU Ice Arena Friday evening, hits the road for the rematch with the Auggies Saturday. Puck drops at 7:05 p.m.

Friday Night: The Cardinals raced out to a 3-1 second-period lead and led 4-3 early in the third, but Augsburg rallied for two goals in a three minutes apart midway through the third in handing SMU a 5-4 setback at the SMU Ice Arena.

Ben Kitzmiller (Lambertville, Mich.), scored SMU’s lone goal vs. the Tommies in Saturday’s 4-1 loss, picked up his second goal in as many games vs. the Auggies on Friday. … Tommy Healy (Rolling Meadows, Ill.), Vincent Unklesbay (Maplewood, Minn.) and Blake Zemaitis (Mount Prospect, Ill.) accounted the Cardinals’ other three goals vs. the Auggies Friday. … Healy’s first-period goal was his first of the season. … Morgan Shepherd (Brainerd, Minn.) and Eric Tenvoorde (St. Cloud, Minn.) each had two assists vs. the Auggies Friday. … Anthony Bohn (Spring Hill, Fla.) collected his team-leading 12th assist vs. Augsburg, pushing his point total to a team-best 16. … Shepherd, who recorded his first two-goal game of the season — and the first multiple-goal game since recording his first collegiate hat trick on Dec. 7, 2007 — in SMU’s 4-3 loss to St. Thomas on Jan. 29 — leads the team with five goals. … Jason Horstman (Faribault, Minn.), who has stopped 40 or more shots twice this season — kicking out a career-high 42 shots vs. Concordia on Nov. 14, 2009 and 41 vs. St. Olaf on Jan. 15 — finished with 32 saves vs. the Auggies on Friday. … Horstman enters today’s rematch with Augsburg with a 4.17 goals-against-average and an .881 save percentage. … SMU’s 42 goals have come from 16 different players, while 21 different Cardinals have notched at least one point.  … The Cardinals have now scored a season-high four goals three times — going 0-2-1 in those three games (4-4 tie vs. Nichols, and 5-4 losses to Bethel and Augsburg). … The Cardinals have been outscored 36-14 in the game’s middle period and 30-13 in the third period. … SMU’s Jan. 9 game vs. UW-River Falls was the second overtime game of the season for the Cardinals, who also tied Nichols 4-4 in overtime on Jan. 2. The Cardinals were 2-0-1 in OT games a year ago.

The Auggies’ last two wins have both been 5-4 decisions — and both have come on Friday. … Augsburg is looking for its first MIAC sweep since taking two from Saint John’s (3-2, 3-1) on Dec. 4-5. … Nine of Augsburg’s 20 games have been decided by one goal. … The Auggies have played in four overtime games this season, going 3-0-1. Augsburg beat UW-Stout (5-4), St. Olaf (4-3) and Hamline (5-4) and tied St. Thomas (3-3). … Augsburg has scored two goals or less in all seven of its losses, and has been shut out three times. On the flip side, the Auggies scored four goals or more in nine of their 12 wins — including Friday’s 5-4 win over SMU. … Joel Sauer and Nick Guran, who entered the weekend tied for the team lead in goals with 11 — each scored vs. the Cardinals Friday, giving them a team-best 12 for the season. … Mario Mjellei, J.P. Perpich and Tedd Falk also scored for the Auggies Friday. Falk’s goal, the game-winner at 10:24 of the third period, was his first of the season. … Jim Jensen enters today’s game as the team-leader in assists with 14, while Guran has accumulated a team-best 24 points. … Augsburg boasts two players — Guran (24) and Sauer (22) — with 20 or more points and seven with at least 10. … Nate Pellegrino kicked out 36 SMU shots in recording the win Friday. … Augsburg has used three different goalies this season, and the trio has combined to post a 2.63 goals-against-average and a .914 save percentage. … The Auggies have outscored their opponents 21-14 in the first period and 21-18 in the second, but they have been outscored 21-14 in the game’s final 20 minutes.

Morgan Shepherd
Men's Hockey
Shepherd scored two of SMU’s three goals in Friday’s 4-3 loss to UST. It was the senior’s first two-goal game of the season and the first multiple-goal game since recording his first collegiate hat trick on Dec. 7, 2007 against Concordia.
Will Wright
Men's Basketball
Wright averaged a team-leading 18.7 ppg in the Cardinals' three men's basketball games last week. The SMU junior kicked off the week with 19 points and seven rebounds against Augsburg last Monday, then followed that up with his fifth 20-plus point effort of the season draining a 21 points in SMU's 78-60 win over Macalester on Wednesday. Wright closed out the week with 16 points against Bethel Saturday.

Wright boasts a team-leading 17.6 ppg scoring average and has scored in double figures in each of the team's 17 games this season.
