SUPERIOR , Wis. — After three weeks under the bright lights of center stage, Saint Mary’s University track and field coach Shawn McMahon gave
Andrew Brueggen (Holmen, Wis.) the day off Saturday, as the Cardinals took part in the UW-Superior Border Battle.
And with Brueggen — and his NCAA automatic-qualifying mark in the weight throw — relaxing in the wings, the center-stage spotlight was up for grabs.
And several Cardinals made the most of the opportunity.
Curt VanAsten (Shiocton, Wis.) made his appearance on center stage, breaking the school record in the 200 hurdles, clocking a time of 25.62. VanAsten’s effort was not only a school record, but also the meet and Fieldhouse records as well.
The Cardinal senior wasn’t alone in the spotlight, however, as the women’s 4x800 relay team of
Regina Quandt (Minneapolis, Minn.),
Joanna Pace (Minocqua, Wis.),
Ashley Acosta (Winnebago, Minn.) and
Brittany Kuehn (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) also were in a record-setting mood, breaking the school mark with a time of 10:08.78.
Teri Heinzen (Marshfield, Wis.) picked up a pair of second-place finishes, as the SMU senior finished second in both the long jump and the 200. In fact, Heinzen actually won the 200 the first time around, but a mix-up in the results meant the event had to be run again, with Heinzen taking second the second time around in a time of 27.11.
“I was really happy with everyone’s performance today,” said SMU coach Shawn McMahon. “We had so many solid performances — it was great to see the women’s 4x800 break the school mark, as well as Curt bettering the 200 hurdles record.
