LA CROSSE, Wis. — The Saint Mary's University track and field teams crossed the border into Wisconsin for Friday's UW-La Crosse Phil Esten Challenge, and it was a couple of Wisconsinites who stole for the show for the Cardinals.
Ryan Wockenfus (New London, Wis.) and
Andrew Brueggen (Holmen, Wis.) made their return to their home state an impressive one, as Wockenfus placed second in the javelin, while Brueggen was second in the hammer throw to lead the SMU men to a sixth-place finish.
Wockenfus recorded a throw of 47.14 meters en route to his second in the javelin, while Brueggen — who provisionally qualified for the NCAA National Outdoor Championships in the hammer a week ago — uncorked a throw of 52.85 to place second in the hammer.
John Kelly (Rochester, Minn.) chipped in a third-place time of 22.80 in the 200, while adding a seventh in the 100 (11.29).
Cole Resleff (Stewartville, Minn.) also recorded a seventh-place finish with a leap of 1.69 in the high jump, while
Peter Borash (Bowlus, Minn.) and
Josiah Ryks (Austin, Minn.) chipped in 10th-place times in the 1,500 (4:14.51) and 400 (52.06), respectively.
On the women's side,
Teri Heinzen (Marshfield, Wis.) placed seventh in the 200 (26.39) and eighth in the 100 (12.88), while
Kassondra Burtis (Fairmont, Minn.) was ninth in the hammer (38.29). The Cardinals, who settled for eighth in the team standings, also got a 10th
Emily Dee (Racine, Minn.) in the 5,000 (20:23.55) and an 11th from
Ashley Acosta (Winnebago, Minn.) in the 400 (64.22).
The Cardinals have a pair of meets next week, traveling to St. Paul, Minn., for the Macalester/Hamline Twilight on Wednesday, before returning home on Saturday, when they play host to the SMU Outdoor Open at the SMU track and field complex.
