WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University track and field teams hit the road Saturday afternoon — all the way across town to take part in the Winona State Open.

And the Cardinals made the Warriors track their home away from home, as Josiah Ryks (Austin, Minn.) and Teri Heinzen (Marshfield, Wis.) led the charge as SMU placed eighth on the men's side and 11th on the women's side.

Ryks clocked a time of 50.71 to finish fifth in the 400, while Heinzen was seventh in the long jump (5.07 meters). Ryan Wockenfus (New London, Wis.) chipped in a sixth-place effort in the javelin (48.50 meters), while Curt VanAsten (Schiocton, Wis.) added a ninth in the 400 hurdles (57.89) and Kevin Hein (Zumbro Falls, Minn.) was 12th in the discus (41.85 meters).

Hein uncorked a leap of 5.07 meters to place seventh in the long jump, while Sara Harstad (Chatfield, Minn.) was ninth in the hammer throw (46.03 meters) and Coco Booker was ninth in the shot put (12.41 meters).

The Cardinals have two meets left before the season-ending Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, taking part in the St. Thomas Tommie Twilight on Wednesday and the Central-Iowa Open on May 7th. SMU will then host the MIAC Championships on May 14-15.
