Match SummaryWINONA, Minn. — It wasn't quite the way Saint Mary's University of Minnesota men's tennis coach was hoping the Cardinals' regular-season would come to an end.
The Cardinals entered Friday's regular-season finale against St. Olaf still clinging to hopes of earning on of the five spots in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Playoffs—but a win over the Oles was crucial.
Unfortunately, the Oles weren't in a very "giving" mood, as St. Olaf jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the doubles competition and posted five, straight-set singles wins to hand the Cardinals a 7-2 conference setback.
"We knew going in that St. Olaf was going to be tough," said Saint Mary's coach
Jeff Halberg. "We just didn't play with the same belief that we did against Saint John's (in a 5-4 win last Sunday).
"It was a good season for the most part, but we are not satisfied—not at all."
Tim Wolford (Maple Grove, Minn.) had a hand in both Cardinal victories, as the junior posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles, while also teaming with
Collin Kaczorowski (Suamico, Wis.) for a 9-8 (6) win at No. 1 doubles.
The Cardinals close out the regular season 4-5 in conference play, while posting a 14-7 record overall.
