ST. PETER, Minn. — It's been a long time …
A very long time …
A very, very long time.
In fact, the last time the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota women's hockey team had beaten Gustavus, this year's current roster was still playing Squirt hockey.
That all changed on Saturday—thanks to a pair of second-period goals and the goaltending of
Tori Herrmann.
Saint Mary's put an end to a 28-game losing streak—and 30 game winless streak—against Gustavus with a clutch, 2-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference win over the Gusties at Don Roberts Ice Arena.
"What a great win for this group," said Saint Mary's coach
Terry Mannor, whose Cardinals nearly snapped the streak on Friday, falling to the Gusties 3-2 in overtime at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena. "We did not play all that well in the first period, but we had a little talk between periods and we out played (Gustavus) the rest of the way.
"I'm really proud of them."
After a scoreless first period—thanks to Herrmann stopping 13 GAC shots—the Cardinals' offense came to life, as
Jane Hannula (Coon Rapids, Minn.) scored for the second straight game with 5:46 remaining in the second period, before
McKenna Parent (Anoka, Minn.) added her seventh of the season three minutes later.
And with Herrmann between the pipes, two goals was more than enough for the Cardinals to put an end to that lengthy streak.
Herrmann finished with 30 saves in recording her first shutout of the season and fourth of her collegiate career. Amanda DiNella and Paige Press combined to make 22 saves in goal for Gustavus.
The Cardinals (6-6-2 MIAC, 7-11-3 overall) are back on the road next weekend, traveling to Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud, Minn., for a pair of conference games against Saint Benedict. Saint Mary's and CSB square off at 7 p.m. on Friday, with the rematch slated for 2 p.m. a day later.
