Doll, Kinne lead charge as Cardinals sweep Oles

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Willie Doll (Amherst, Wis.) and Bob Kinne (St. Paul, Minn.) have proven to be an opposing pitcher's worst nightmare of late.

Doll headed into Saint Mary's University of Minnesota baseball team's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader against St. Olaf on the heels of a 4-for-6 performance against UW-Oshkosh on Friday—the senior's team-leading 13th multiple-hit game, and his first four-hit performance of the season.

Kinne, meanwhile stepped to the plate against the Oles having gone 9-for-13 with seven RBIs in his last three games—including a 3-for-5, 2-RBI showing against the Titans on Friday.

And the Cardinals' dynamic duo was at it again on Saturday.

Kinne collected three hits and drove in a run, while Doll delivered four hits—none bigger than a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning—as the Cardinals swept their conference doubleheader against the Oles 7-4 and 7-5.

Saint Mary's wasted no time getting out front in Game 1, as the Cardinals erupted for six runs in the third inning and added a solo run in the fourth to take a commanding 7-0 lead.

St. Olaf would put together a pair of two-run innings in the sixth and seventh, but it was too little, too late, as the Cardinals picked up the opening-game victory.

Doll, Kinne, and Ben Buerkle (Roseville, Minn.) all collected two hits to pace Saint Mary's 12-hit Game 1 attack, while Doll, Buerkle, and Tyler Lursen (Maple Grove, Minn.) each drove in a pair of runs. Steph Scatassa (Westchester, Ill.) picked up his team-leading fourth win of the season, throwing five shutout innings with five strikeouts.

The Cardinals again jumped out early in the nightcap, scoring twice in the third inning. But St. Olaf responded with four unanswered runs to take a 4-2 lead into the fifth.

Saint Mary's knotted the game at 4-4 with single runs in the fifth and sixth, but again St. Olaf regained the advantage with a solo run in the sixth—setting up Doll's biggest hit of the afternoon in the ninth.

With runners on first and third and one out, Doll blasted his second home run of the season to give the Cardinals the lead for good.

Doll went 2-for-5 with three RBIs in Game 2, while Buerkle finished 2-for-4—including his first home run of the season—and also drove in two runs for the Cardinals. Nathan Mathwig (Woodbury, Minn.) picked up the pitching win, throwing three innings of two-hit, scoreless relief.

The Cardinals (5-5 MIAC, 17-11 overall) are back in action on Thursday, entertaining Augsburg in a 2:30 p.m. MIAC doubleheader at Max Molock Field.
