WINONA, Minn. — There's something about taking the mound against St. Thomas that seems to bring out the best in Saint Mary's University of Minnesota pitcher Ryan Wolfe (Wabasha, Minn.).

Nearly a year ago to the day, Wolfe picked up his first collegiate complete-game shutout, blanking St. Thomas for nine innings in a 1-0 Cardinal victory — a performance that earned him his first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honor.

Three hundred sixty four days later, Wolfe baffled the Tommies hitters once again en route to his second complete game — and second career shutout — tossing an eight-inning gem in guiding Saint Mary's to a 4-0 victory last Tuesday.

And Monday, the right-hander was once again rewarded for his Tommie dominance, being named the MIAC Pitcher of the Week for the second time in his collegiate career.

Wolfe — who has now thrown 17 consecutive scoreless innings against St. Thomas in his last two outings — was in complete control against the Tommies last Tuesday, allowing just six hits — one in the second, one in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the seventh — while walking one and striking out four.

Wolfe only allowed four runners to get past first base — and worked out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the seventh with a groundball double play.

With Tuesday's victory, Wolfe improved to 3-1 on the season, while lowering his ERA to 1.93. He has logged a team-high 37.1 innings and has gone five or more innings in each of his six starts — including throwing a season-high eight innings twice.
