WINONA, Minn. — For the second straight year, Saint Mary's University's James Green (East Bethel, Minn.) proved his prowess in the classroom, as well as the baseball diamond, as the junior pitcher picked up his second straight CoSIDA Academic All-District® VI honor in early May.

This time around, Green wasn't about to stop at being named Academic All-District®.

Academic All-District® has a nice ring to it — but so does Academic All-American®.

Green was one of 33 NCAA Division III baseball players to be named Academic All-American®, landing Second Team honors, it was announced Tuesday.

Despite the cancellation of spring competition as a result of COVID-19, CoSIDA continued its sponsorship of the Academic All-America awards program. Student-athletes were selected based on career statistics.

Green, who hauled in eight post-season honors following the 2019 season — including ABCA/Rawlings and D3baseball.com All-American honors and ABCA/Rawlings Midwest Region Pitcher of the Year — went 1-1 in his two starts for the Cardinals, before his junior year was cut short by COVID-19.

Green helped lead the Cardinals to a second straight MIAC Tournament appearance a year ago, compiling a near-perfect 8-1 record and a microscopic 1.85 ERA in 2019. He was 1-1 with 3.75 ERA in his two starts in 2020 and boasts an 11-5 record and 1.95 ERA through his first three seasons in a Cardinal uniform.

Green has tossed 129.1 innings in three seasons with Saint Mary's and owns a whopping eight complete games in 20 career starts. He has surrendered just 18 walks and has struck out 122 — including a career-high 13 against No. 1-ranked Concordia-Chicago on March 22, 2019.

Green, a secondary education major with a 3.61 GPA, was the only player from the MIAC selected to one of the three CoSIDA Academic All-America® Teams

Senior Derek Manning of Elizabethtown College was selected as the recipient of the Academic All-America® Team Member of the Year award for Division III baseball. Manning is now a three-time first team Academic All-America® honoree, having also been a First Team selection in 2018 and 2019.

Four of the 33 members of the 2020 Academic All-America® Division III baseball teams have a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA. The 11 members of the First Team have an average GPA of 3.86 and the 33 student-athletes that make up all three teams have an average cumulative GPA of 3.78.

Nine of this year's 33 student-athletes on the three teams are repeat honorees from 2019. Manning is one of two members of this year's First Team that are selections for the third time in their career. Matt Johnston of MIT is the other three-time honoree among this year's selections. Johnston, a first team pick as an outfielder this year, was a second team selection in 2019. Additionally, Johnston was named a third team pick as an outfielder in 2018.
