WINONA, Minn. — In their first home game in 683 days, Saint Mary's University's
Ryan Wolfe (Wabasha, Minn.) turned in a pitching masterpiece.
Â
And
Taylor Anderson (Waukesha, Wis.) made sure the senior right-hander was rewarded for his efforts.
Â
Anderson delivered a one-out, walk-off double — preserving Wolfe's four-hit, complete-game gem, and lifting the Cardinals to a 2-1, nonconference win over Luther.
Â
The Cardinals didn't get another complete-game pitching performance in the nightcap — but they definitely got another pitching Picasso, as
Jonathan Cieminski (Fountain City, Wis.),
Jacob Johnson (Hartland, Wis.), and
Kodey Kiel (Owatonna, Minn.) combined a two-hitter, as Saint Mary's completed the sweep with a 4-2 victory.
Â
The Cardinals got on the board in first inning in the opener on a two-out,
Andy Tepp (Stevens Point, Wis.) single, but the Norse would answer with a solo run of their own — an unearned tally — in the top of the second.
Â
That would be the only run Wolfe would allow, limiting Luther to just three more hits — including two in the fourth inning, when the Norse had runners on second and third with one out, only to have the crafty senior work out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout to short.
Â
Saint Mary's didn't have much more success against Luther pitchers Charlie Rubendalll and Collin Chalmers — until finally breaking a string of five straight scoreless innings in the bottom of the seventh.
Â
Tyler O'Brien (Belle Plaine, Minn.) delivered a one-out double to deep right-center off Chalmers and Anderson followed with a double of his own to left to score O'Brien with the game-winning run.
Â
Anderson finished the opener 3-for-4, while O'Brien and
Will Matthews (Geneva, Ill.) chipped in two hits each. Wolfe scattered just the four hits — all singles — while walking one and striking out four.
Â
The two teams traded first-inning runs to open Game 2 — the Cardinals' coming on a
Will Matthews' RBI single — before O'Brien delivered his second double of the afternoon, this one scoring both
Joey Costello (Victoria, Minn.) and
Trevon VanEgtern (La Crosse, Wis.) for a 3-1 Saint Mary's lead.
Â
Luther cut the lead to one with a solo run in the third, but again the Cardinals had an answer, scoring what would be the game's final run in the bottom of the fourth when
Zach Drake (Westby, Wis.) singled with one out, advanced to second on a wild pitch, took third on a passed ball, and beat the throw home on O'Brien's infield grounder.
Â
Cieminski allowed two runs on two hits, while walking three and striking out three in three innings of work, before giving way to Johnson, who tossed three innings of perfect relief, striking out three to pick up the win. Kiel closed the door in the seventh, working out of a first-and-second, no one out jam for his first save of the season.
Â
Matthews led the Cardinals' six-hit Game 2 attack with a pair of hits in three-at-bats, while O'Brien, Anderson, Costello, and Drake had the Cardinals' other four hits.
Â
The Cardinals (3-0 overall) and Norse will square off again next Saturday with a single, nine-inning game at Max Molock Field. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
