Kugel made his presence felt on the soccer pitch not by scoring goals, but by keeping the opposition off the scoreboard. A four-year starting defender — twice named by his peers as the team’s defensive MVP — Kugel spearheaded a defense that surrendered just 77 goals in four seasons, helping SMU boast a 1.10 goals-against-average during his time as a Cardinal.
Kugel’s best year was his senior season, when — along with recording a goal and an assist on the offensive end — he guided SMU to a single-season school-record 0.81 goals-against-average. Named SMU’s Outstanding Male Athlete, Kugel was a First-Team All-MIAC and First-Team All-West Region selection, as well as a Third-Team All-American.
Following his stellar collegiate career, Kugel went on to play professionally for BK Avarta in Rodovre, Denmark, as well as for the Twin Cities Tornado of the United Soccer League’s Premier Development League.
