Gogolewski was a mainstay on the pitcher’s mound for the SMU baseball team during his four-year collegiate career — highlighted by a conference championship in 1993. And his playing days did not end when his Saint Mary’s eligibility did, as the left-hander was drafted in the 15th round of the Major League Baseball Draft by the Texas Rangers and spent five years playing in the minor leagues. Gogolewski compiled a 19-3 record and a 3.06 ERA — not to mention 111 strikeouts — during his time at Saint Mary’s. Upon graduation, Gogolewski spent two minor-league seasons in the Rangers’ organization, before playing three more years in the Independent League.
