As a freshman, Richards helped guide Saint Mary's to the 1968 conference title, hitting .340 and averaging more than one RBI per game in conference play. Richards, who would also help Saint Mary's to an MIAC crown during his junior season in 1970, hit .318 (83-for-261) with 49 runs, 12 doubles, 10 triples, eight home runs and 54 RBIs during his collegiate career.

Richards' 10 career triples rank No. 1 all-time, while his five triples during his sophomore year in 1969 is a single-season program record.
