Arens was a mainstay between the pipes for the Cardinal men’s hockey team, appearing in 70 games over his four-year career — and earning honorable-mention All-American honors after his sophomore year and First-Team All-MIAC and MIAC Player of the Year honors in his final year in an SMU uniform.

Arens owns two of the program’s top six single-season saves records, stopping a record-setting 953 shots during his freshman year in 1980-81, while kicking out 671 shots the following season. His 42.9 saves-per-game during the 1983-84 season are also a single-season record, while his 2,709 saves and 38.7 saves-per-game are tops in program history.

One of only a handful of goalies selected as a team captain, Arens was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets of the National Hockey League following his freshman season, and spent time at the Jets’ tryout camp upon graduation from Saint Mary’s.
