Matthews, who has been a scoring machine this season, enjoyed her best game as a Cardinal last Wednesday against St. Olaf, as the sophomore recorded her first collegiate hat trick — accounting for all three Saint Mary’s goals in a 4-3 double-overtime setback.
Â
Matthews scored back-to-back goals eight minutes apart in the first half, then sent the game into overtime with her third of the contest with just 12 seconds remaining in regulation.
Â
Matthews’ hat trick against St. Olaf — the Cardinals’ first since Emily Loof netted three goals against Bethany Lutheran on 6, 2017 — was her third multiple-goal games this season, having netted two goals against both Marian on Sept. 6 and Ripon two days later.
Â
With her three goals against the Oles, Matthews pushed her team-leading total to 10. She also leads the team in points with 23 and shares the team lead in assists with three.
