Saint Mary’s Ryan Wolfe (Wabasha, Minn.) came as close to perfection as you can get without actually tossing a perfect game Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinal right-hander faced just 22 batters — one over the minimum — and limited Augsburg to just a third-inning single in tossing a complete-game, one-hit shutout in Saint Mary’s 3-0 victory over Augsburg in the opening game of their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader.
Wolfe set down the Auggies in order in their first two at-bats, before surrendering a lead-off single to Tye Gage to open the third. Wolfe induced a groundball double play and a strikeout to end the third and retired 11 straight before a fielding error allowed the lead-off runner to reach in the bottom of the seventh. A strikeout and a pair of flyouts later, and Wolfe had locked up his third career shutout and fifth career complete game.
Wolfe’s line against the Auggies: 7.0 IP, 1 hit, 0 runs, 0 walks and 9 strikeouts.
