Ziakas was a literal brick wall for the Saint Mary’s women’s hockey team in helping the Cardinals to back-to-back nonconference wins during their East Coast trip last week, stopping 30 of the 31 shots she faced against Johnson & Wales and Worcester State.
The senior goalie kicked off the week stopping all 12 shots she faced in shutting out Johnson & Wales 1-0 last Wednesday. The shutout was her first of the season and fourth of her collegiate career.
Ziakas followed that up with an 18-save effort in SMU’s 4-1 victory over Worcester State the following evening. Ziakas was perfect in the first period against the Lancers, while surrendering her lone goal of the week in the second stanza, where she stopped 10 of Worcester State’s 11 shots.
For the week, Ziakas boasted a 0.50 goals-against-average and a .967 save percentage.
Ziakas — who has compiled a 2.15 GAA and .910 save percentage in 10 games — and the Cardinals are back in action on Friday and Saturday, heading to St. Scholastica’s Mars Lakeview Arena In Duluth, Minn., for a pair of games against conference-newcomer St. Scholastica.
