Ziakas was the perfect embodiment of a brick wall in helping the Cardinal women’s hockey team to a 1-1 tie against the Gusties last Friday — stopping a career-high 55 of the 56 shots she faced last Friday — before adding a 34-save effort in SMU’s 5-0 loss to Gustavus the following afternoon.
Ziakas was instrumental in Saint Mary’s 1-1 tie against the high-powered Gusties, allowing just a late, first-period goal, and stopping the final 39 shots she faced — and added stops against all three GAC shooters in helping SMU win the shootout 1-0.
The following afternoon, Ziakas was at it again, stopping 34 shots — including 18 in the second period.
Ziakas — whose 55 saves were not only a career-high, but also the most by an SMU goalie since Ashley Corcoran stopped 56 shots against Hamline on Feb. 3, 2017 — enters this weekend’s conference series against St. Catherine boasting a 2.41 goals-against-average and a .914 save percentage.
