Matt Sankner (Pennington, N.J.) — coming off a 23-save showing in a 3-2 loss to Bethel last Friday — came up big when the SMU men’s hockey team needed it most.
 
With the Cardinals still jockeying for position in the MIAC Playoffs, Sankner was at his best between the pipes, stopping all 31 shots he faced in leading SMU to a 4-0 road win over Bethel Saturday — and helping the Cardinals solidify the No. 6 seed in the post-season tournament.
 
Sankner’s 31-save shutout — the first of his collegiate career — marked the fifth time this season that the freshman has stopped 30 or more shots in a game.
