Team scores don't tell story for SMU

WINONA, Minn. — There were no teams scores kepts at the UW-Stout Quadrangular, but then, Saint Mary's University track and field coach Paul Thornton didn't need a sheet of paper with numbers on it to tell him how his teams performed.

After all, he had witnessed the Cardinals' impressive showing first-hand.

Thomas Norman (Edina, Minn.) led the way for the SMU men, placing first in the shot put (36-2) and second in the weight throw (25-11). Assumpta Mbele (Northfield, Minn.), Theresa Miller (New Berlin, Wis.) and Jenny Folgers (McHenry, Ill.) all recorded a pair of second-place showings, and Ashley Dingels (Gibbon, Minn.) spearheaded a 1-2-3 SMU finish in the 200 to lead the Cardinal women.

"I was very happy with our performances," said Thornton. "I think everyone is progressing very nicely, and that's encouraging to see. As long as we can continue to improve with each week, we should be in perfect position heading into the (indoor season-ending) MIAC Championships."

Dingels stopped the clock in 27.60 to lead SMU's sweep of fhe 200, with Mbele and Amber Liss (Onalaska, Wis.) close behind in 27.66 and 27.81, respectively. Mbele's other second came in the long jump, where she posted a leap of 16-2. Miller, meanwhile placed second in both the 800 (2:37.55) and the 1,500 (5:23.49), while Folgers' seconds in the 55 hurdles (9.48) and the 400 (1:08.28), Liss (55, 7.72) and Melissa Redig (high jump, 4-7) also recorded second-place showings for the SMU women.

Along with Norman's strong showing the throwing events, the Cardinals' Chris Beach (Maple Grove, Minn.) proved to be a very busy Cardinal, placing second in the shot put (31-5 1/4), fourth in the high jump (5-6) and sixth in the both the long jump (15-7 1/2) and the 55 hurdles (9.04). Shawn Stewart (McHenry, Ill.) was fifth in the 55 hurdles (8.91) and eighth in the 400 (55.72), while Ethan Lane (Winona, Minn.) and Jon Bell (Ogden, Utah) were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 400 (53.44 / 54.17), B.J. Klenke (Jordan, Minn.) was seventh in the 1,500 (4:28.51) and Jim Baertsch (Winona, Minn.) was eighth in the 800 (2:04.93).

"This was a second straight solid showing for us. Hopefully we can conitnue to improve this weekend, when we get to show what we can do on our home surface," said Thornton, whose team returns to action Saturday, hosting the SMU Open. "I like the progress I'm seeing right now – we just have to keep working hard to improve each day."
