Liss breaks 400 mark (again) to fuel SMU

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — There were not a lot of Saint Mary's University track and field athletes at the UNI Dome Open Friday, but the Cardinals who were there certainly made their presence felt.

Amber Liss (Onalaska, Wis.) shattered her own school record in the 400 meters to highlight the Cardinals' performances at the non-scored event.

Liss broke the tape in 60.22, re-writing the school's 400 record for the third time this season. Liss clocked a time of 61.20 at the SMU Open three weeks ago, then bettered that time to 60.94 at the Don Bremer Invitational in La Crosse, Wis., a week later. And, after a week "off," Liss was at it again, using her school-record time of 60.22 to place sixth in the 34-person field.

And Liss needed every second to retain that school-record, thanks to the outstanding effort of teammate Ashley Dingels (Gibbon, Minn.), who finished seventh, clocking a time of 60.23. SMU's only other female participant was Jenny Folgers (McHenry, Ill.), who added a 9.84 time to place 15th in the 60-meter hurdles.

On the men's side, Ethan Lane (Winona, Minn.) and B.J. Klenke (Jordan, Minn.) led the Cardinal charge, turning in their fastest times of the season in the 800 and 1,000, respectively. Lane crossed the tape in 2:03.35 to place 15th in the 800, while Klenke's season-best effort of 2:41.00 was good for 11th in the 1,000.

Jon Bell (Ogden, Utah) chipped in a 12th-place time of 1:27.17 in the 600, while Chris Beach (Maple Grove, Minn.) was 26th in the 60-meter hurdles (9.68) and Dwyne Smith (Burnsville, Minn.) was 30th in the 400 (54.92) and 47th in the 200 (24.64).
