MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Christian Brothers University was playing its 19th and 20th games of the season.
The Saint Mary's University baseball team was playing its first and second.
And it showed.
The Buccaneers, behind the pitching of Chad Nolan and Steven Oelke swept their nonconference series against the Cardinals, beating SMU 7-5 in the opener and 2-0 in the nightcap.
The Cardinals came out swinging in Game 1, scoring three times in the top of the first inning.
Tony Cicalello (St. Paul, Minn.) and
Rob Kimlinger (Lake Elmo, Minn.) laced back-to-back one-out singles and
David McMahon (Coon Rapids, Minn.) followed with the first of his RBI doubles. After a walk to
Matt Domarus (Woodbury, Minn.) loaded the bases, Kimlinger scored on a passed ball and
Dusty Wilhelmy (Mendota Heights, Minn.) singled to right to score McMahon.
The lead was short-lived, however, as CBU (12-8 overall) scored three runs of its own in the bottom of the inning, then added three more in the second and one in the fourth to take a 7-3 advantage.
SMU cut the gap to 7-5 with two runs in the top of the seventh — the first on a sacrifice fly by Kimlinger and the second on an RBI double by McMahon — but it was too little, too late.
Andy Ebert (Winona, Minn.) took the loss on the mound, surrendering seven runs on 11 hits in four innings.
Rob Hollnagel (La Crosse, Wis.) pitched two innings of hitless relief.
The Cardinals' bats fell silent in the nightcap, however, as Nolan held SMU to one hit – a two-out single by
Aaron Smolinski (White Bear Lake, Minn.) in the top of the sixth — in tossing the complete-game shutout.
Eric Williamson (St. Charles, Minn.) was tagged with the Game 2 loss, despite allowing just two runs on six hits, while not walking a batter and striking out three in six innings of work.
