NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Saint Mary's University track and field coach Paul Thornton knows that he's only got three weeks of training remaining before the biggest meet of his teams' season — the MIAC Championships.
And Thornton knows that now is the time for his Cardinals to start gearing up for that all-important conference meet.
After watching the Cardinals' performances at the Manitou Classic, it's probably safe to that the women's team is geared up.
The Cardinals shattered seven school records — including two individual and two relay by Jenny Folgers (McHenry, Ill.) — en route to a 13th-place finish in the 18-team field.
"It was a great day for the women's squad," understated Thornton. "Everyone competed very well and it's obvious that we are starting to make some good strides in preparation for the conference meet in May."
Good strides? How about great strides.
Folgers rewrote her own records in the 100 and 400 hurdles, placing fifth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.43, while adding another fifth in the 400 hurdles, crossing the finish line in 66.71. Folgers also had a pair in both record-breaking relay performances, joining Assumpta Mbele (Northfield, Minn.), Ashley Dingels (Gibbon, Minn.) and
Amber Liss (Onalaska, Wis.) to place second in the 4 x 400 (4:02.58) and sixth in the 4 x 100 (50.53).
Amber Liss broke her own record in the 400 meters with a second-place time of 59.30), while Keri Drake (Strugeon Bay, Wis.) set the school mark in the pole vault (7-9 3/4) and
Missy Mollick (Hastings, Minn.) broke her two-year-old 3,000 steeplechase record with a time of 12:44.68.
On the men's side, there were no records broken, but the Cardinal men turned in some rather stellar performances none the less at the Carleton Relays.
Dwyne Smith (Burnsville, Minn.) clocked career-best marks of 11.49 and 23.38 in the 100 and 200, respectively, while Jon Bell (Ogden, Utah) and Ethan Lane (Winona, Minn.) chipped in their best times of the year, 52.87 and 52.99, respectively, in the 400, and Luke Hofmann (St. Louis, Mo.) did the same in the 1,500 (4:43.08).
