ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's track and field team broke a pair of records and got personal-best times of a handful of other competitors at the regular season-ending Meet of the Saints Saturday afternoon.
"We had a ton of great performances, which should really help our cause heading into the MIAC Championships," said SMU coach Paul Thornton. "The attitude of the men is outstanding and everyone is very exciting about what they can accomplish at the conference championships."
Dwyne Smith (Burnsville, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals, breaking the school record in the 200 with a time of 22.66, while teammate
Shawn Stewart (McHenry, Ill.) shattered his own school mark in the 400 hurdles with a time of 56.74. Smith also turned in a personal-best time of 11.36 in the 100, while B.J. Klenke (Jordan, Minn.),
Jim Baertsch (Winona, Minn.) and
Keith Pieschek (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) all turned in personal bests in the 800 with times of 2:00.54, 2:00.98 and 2:02.07, respectively.
"We had a lot of breakthrough performances," Thornton said. "This was the perfect final tune-up for this group."
