Macalester, rain not a good combination

WINONA, Minn. — As if having to play Macalester — arguably one of the best women's soccer programs in all of NCAA Division III — in your Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener wasn't bad enough, The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team had to battle the mighty Scots in the midst of a constant downpour.

Macalester and rain were not a good combination for the Cardinals.

Macalester scored four first-half goals — the second time in as many years that the Scots have netted four goals in the opening 45 minutes vs. SMU — then waited out a 30-minute rain-and-lightning delay, before tallying one goal in the second half en route to a 5-0 victory in a game that was shortened to 70 minutes due to the rain and lightning.

"Macalester is a classy, classy team," said SMU coach Tony Guinn. "They've got a lot of talent, and they showed us what it takes to be the best in this conference."

For Guinn, who is in his first year at the helm at SMU, it was his first look at what the MIAC has to offer — and it was an eye-opener.

"I didn't really know what to expect," said Guinn, whose team managed just two shots on goal in falling to 0-4-1 overall. "I knew from their reputation that they were going to be good — but I think they're better than their reputation lets on."

The Scots opened the scoring 10 minutes into the opening half, as Annie Borton scored the first of her two goals, beating SMU goalkeeper Jennifer Johnson (Racine, Wis.) with a shot that bounced off the left goal post and into the net. Katie Pastorius made it 2-0 four minutes later, and Rachel Larson and Jessica Bullen netted goals seven minutes apart late in the half to give the Scots a commanding 4-0 halftime advantage.

"I was proud of the way our team played — they played hard and they never gave up," said Guinn. "For Macalester to play the way they did, in those conditions, I tip my hat to them, they were outstanding."
