ARDEN HILLS, Minn. — Tony Guinn was hoping Wednesday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Bethel would be the start of a season-ending three game winning streak for his Saint Mary's University women's soccer team.

The Royals, however, had other ideas.

Lauren Johnson scored single goals in each half, as Bethel handed SMU its third straight loss — and extended the Cardinals' winless streak to six games (0-4-2) — with a 2-0 victory.

"Bethel played better than we did and deserved to win," said Guinn, whose team has not won since a 2-1 overtime victory over Gustavus on Sept. 17. "It's not that we played that poorly, (Bethel) just played a little better."

Johnson gave the Royals a 1-0 first-half advantage, beating SMU goalkeeper Jennifer Johnson (Racine, Wis.) with a shot in the game's 20th minute. The Bethel senior then netted her second of the game seven minutes into the second half to seal the win for the Royals.

"I thought we played much better than we did against Saint Benedict," said Guinn, referring to last Saturday's 3-1 setback in their home finale. "(Lauren Johnson) is a very good player and she scored two incredible goals. I tip my hat to her, today she proved to be the better player."

The Cardinals (2-5-2 MIAC, 8-5-3 overall) close out their MIAC schedule at St. Catherine, before traveling to Martin Luther for a nonconference season finale on Sunday.
