WINONA, Minn. — In his final regular-season meet, John Kelly (Rochester, Minn.) certainly saved his best for last, as the Saint Mary's University senior broke the school record in the 400 to lead the way for the Cardinals at the Winona State University Invitational.

Kelly stopped the clock in 49.91, breaking Josiah Ryks 2010 record of 49.97, while Andrew Brueggen (Holmen, Wis.) enjoyed a busy afternoon, placing second in the hammer (59.99 meters), while adding thirds in the discus (41.30 meters) and the shot put (12.07 meters).

Ryan Winegardner (Northfield, Minn.) and Michael Mocker (Dubuque, Iowa) gave SMU a 3-4 finish in the 1,500, clocking times of 4:21.59 and 4:33.73, respectively. Peter Borash (Bowlus, Minn.) was fourth in the 800 (1:59.34), followed by John Soucheray (Woodbury, Minn. / 2:01.75), Jake Traxler (Le Center, Minn. / 2:02.68) and Quentin Moore (Minneapolis, Minn. / 2:02.70).

Sara Harstad (Chatfield, Minn.) fueled the Cardinal women's effort, placing second in the hammer with a toss of 48.15 meters, while Joanna Pace (Minoqua, Wis.) and Coco Booker (St. Paul, Minn.) collected sixth-place showings in the 800 (2:27.37) and shot put (12.07 meters), respectively, with Katherine Mockler (Dubuque, Iowa) adding a seventh in the 1,500 (6:11.58).

The Cardinals are back in action next Friday and Saturday, traveling to St. Peter, Minn., for the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
