ARDEN HILLS, Minn. — Saint Mary's University women's soccer coach
Neil Cassidy must be wondering what he ever did to make the soccer gods so angry.
Last Tuesday, the Cardinals appeared to have things well in control, as Saint Mary's headed into the second half of its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against St. Olaf boasting a 2-0 advantage.
The Oles, however, scored three times in the first 15 minutes in dealing the Cardinals a heartbreaking 3-2 setback.
Unfortunately for Cassidy and the Cardinals, the heartbreak continued on Saturday against Bethel.
After matching the Royals—who were coming off a 2-0 victory over 12th-ranked Concordia on Wednesday—blow-for-blow, it appeared that their conference match would be headed to the first of a possible two 10-minute overtime periods.
Only to have lightning strike again.
Bethel's Jessica Huseby scored at 89:51—yes, with just nine seconds remaining in regulation—to lift the Royals to a 1-0 victory over the Cardinals at the Ona Orth Athletic Complex.
Victoria Perez suffered the loss in goal for Saint Mary's, finishing with four saves, while Micale Jensen stopped both Cardinal shots she faced in recording the shutout for the Royals.
The Cardinals (0-7-1 MIAC, 4-9-1 overall) step out of conference play for the final time next Wednesday, as Saint Mary's hosts UW-La Crosse in a 7 p.m. nonconference game at Ochrymowycz Field.
