• 1 x 2: Peyton Buerman (Shawano, Wis.) and Ashley Renwick (Farmington, Minn.) picked up their first collegiate singles wins for the Saint Mary’s women’s tennis team at last weekend’s ITA Regional/Midwest Open. Bueerman outlasted Northwestern’s Taylar Smith 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 10-6 and Renwick followed suit with a marathon, 6-0, 3-6, 10-4 victory over Caroline Hutchinson of Wartburg
• 2: Jordyn Matthews (Seattle, Wash.) scored both goals, as the Saint Mary’s women’s soccer team avenged a 10-0 loss to St. Catherine in April with a 2-1, MIAC victory last Saturday. Matthews has now recorded two, two-goal games this season and owns seven multiple-goal games in her collegiate career. Matthews followed that effort up by scoring SMU’s lone goal in last Sunday’s 2-1 loss to UW-Stout.
• 2: Roberto Bontempi (Santos, Brazil) scored his second goal of the season in the Cardinal men’s soccer team’s 3-2 loss to UW-Eau Claire last Saturday.
• 2-0-1: With their 2-1 win over St. Catherine last Saturday, the Saint Mary’s women’s soccer team has now opened conference play facing three teams that qualified for the 2019 MIAC Tournament — there was not conference tournament in 2020 due to the pandemic. SMU is 2-0-1 against those three.
• 3-1: Maggie Frye (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Kennedy Morgan (Green Bay, Wis.) teamed up to go 3-1 in doubles play for the Saint Mary’s women’s tennis team at last weekend’s ITA Regional/Midwest Open.
• 4: Mandy Schmidt (Mitchell, S.D.) collected her team-leading fourth double-double of the season in the Cardinal volleyball team’s 3-2 loss to Carroll last Friday. Schmidt posted a season-high 38 assists and added 12 digs for double-double No. 4.
• 5: Eli Szymanski (La Crosse, Wis.) scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season — converting his fourth PK of the season — in the second half of last Saturday’s 3-2 Cardinal men’s soccer team loss to UW-Eau Claire. Szymanski has now accounted for Saint Mary’s last eight penalty kick goals.
• 7, 12: For the third time this season, Saint Mary’s men’s soccer goalkeeper Daniel Sessler equaled his then-career-high, finishing with seven saves in the Cardinals’ 2-0 loss to St. Scholastica last Wednesday. Sessler followed up that seven-save effort with a new career high, stopping 12 shots in the Cardinals’ 3-2 nonconference loss to UW-Eau Claire three days later.
• 8: The Saint Mary’s women’s soccer team had its eight-game unbeaten streak snapped on Sunday, as the Cardinals dropped a 2-1 decision to UW-Stout. SMU’s 7-0-1 start was its best since the team went 8-0-0 and 9-1-0 to open the 2005 season.
• 9: With their 2-1 win over St. Catherine last Saturday, the Cardinal women’s soccer team put an end to a nine-game losing streak against the Wildcats, dating back to a 3-1 win on Oct. 15, 2011.
• 9: The Saint Mary’s women’s tennis team collected nine singles victories at last weekend’s ITA Regional/Midwest Open, led by Emily Henderson )Jordan, Minn.), Peyton Buerman (Shawano, Wis.), and Ashley Renwick (Farmington, Minn.) with two each.
• 10: Alexis Nguyen (West Corvina, Calif.) stopped a career-high 10 shots in the Saint Mary’s women’s soccer team’s 2-1 win over St. Catherine last Saturday. The 10-save effort was four saves more than her previous career-best, set against Carleton on Sept. 14, 2021.
• 17: After 17 straight road matches — including four last weekend at the UW-Whitewater Invitational — the Cardinal volleyball team finally returns home to the Saint Mary’s Gym on Friday, hosting St. Scholastica. The Cardinals will play six of their final 10 matches on their home court.
• 17 + 14 = 1: Braidyn Ruetten (Holmen, Wis.) and Izabella Pigorsch (La Crosse, Wis.) each turned in career performances for the Cardinal volleyball team in its 3-2 loss to Carroll last Friday, with Ruetten pounded out a career-high 17 kills, while Pigorsch added a career-best 14.
• 28: Mandy Schmidt (Mitchell, S.D.) accounted for 28 of the team’s 30 assists in the Cardinal volleyball team’s 3-0 conference loss at Augsburg last Wednesday.
• 59: DeJaye Baab (Wabasha, Minn.) racked up 59 digs in the Saint Mary’s volleyball team’s four matches at last weekend’s UW-Whitewater Invitational. With her 59 digs, Baab pushed her career total to 1,395, ranking her fifth all-time.
• 722:13: The Saint Mary’s women’s soccer team allowed its first goal of the season in last Saturday’s 2-1 win over St. Catherine. The Wildcats’ goal in the 72nd minute snapped a 722:13-minute scoreless streak. Saint Mary’s has now outscored its opponents 26-1.
