Doubles takes center stage for Cardinals

WHITEWATER, Wis. — A day after the singles players stole the show for the Saint Mary's University women's tennis team at the ITA Regional/Midwest Open, it was the Cardinal doubles teams' turn to shine.

And it was the team of Maggie Frye (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Morgan Kennedy (Green Bay, Wis.) that shone brightest.

Frye and Morgan rattled off three straight victories Saturday — beating teams from Concordia (8-4), Hamline (8-3), and Northwestern (8-7) — before having their run ended with an 8-2 loss to a team from UW-Whitewater.

Maddie Dosser (South St. Paul, Minn.) and Kailee Johnson (Rochester, Minn.) also collected a victory to open doubles play Saturday, posting an 8-2 victory, but the SMU duo came up short in their second match, losing 8-5.

Natalie Peterson (St. Cloud, Minn.) and Emily Henderson (Jordan, Minn.) headed into Saturday looking to keep their singles runs alive — having reached the third round following Friday's opening day of competition — but both fell short in their bids to reach Round 4.

Peterson lost to Ashley Tarrolly of Saint Benedict 6-3, 6-3 in the ITA Regional portion of the event, while Henderson dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision to UW-Whitewater's Bryce Bigelow at the Midwest Open.

Peyton Buerman (Shawano, Wis.) and Ashley Renwick (Farmington, Minn.) kicked off consolation singles play at the Midwest Open Saturday in winning fashion, as Buerman beat Jennifer Larson of Central-Iowa 8-0 and Renwick outlasted Kaylee Frieking of Concordia (Wis.) 8-7 (3). That would be the end of the road, however, as both fell in their second match of the day —Buerman losing to Sydney Douglas of Gustavus (8-0) and Renwick falling to Edgewood's Ally Verbauwhede (8-5).

Sofia Holmes (Medina, Minn.), Ella Boomgarden (St. Peter, Minn.), Kara Hand (Lisle, Ill.) and the doubles team of Zoie Becker (St. James, Minn.)/Sarrianna Hofer (Wausau, Wis.) were all eliminated with second-day consolation-match losses Saturday.

The ITA Regional/Midwest Open marks the end of the fall portion of the Cardinals' schedule. Saint Mary's will open play in the 2022 season on Jan. 28, when the Cardinals welcome Northwestern to the Winona Tennis Center for a 4 p.m. nonconference match.
