WINONA, Minn. — Fueled by a season-best 14 service aces, the Saint Mary's University (9-10, 2-2) volleyball team delivered a powerful performance to notch a home victory over the Hamline Pipers (7-8, 2-3) in four sets Friday night.
Brenna Bruchert led the offensive efforts. Bruchert hammered 19 kills and drilled two service aces, accumulating 22 total points. Kali Olson also made a significant impact, contributing 17 kills with a hitting percentage of .419, along with four blocks, adding up to 23 points (her season best) for the team.
Paige Klug excelled defensively, recording 15 digs and contributing three service aces. Ayla Olson came up big at the service line with four aces, adding 11 kills and earning 15.5 points.
Saint Mary's set the tone early, jumping out to a quick 7-3 lead in the first set and never looking back. The serving line proved to be a game-changer as the Cardinals recorded six aces in the first set where the Cardinals disrupted the Pipers rhythm and took control of the set, turning a 17-11 lead into a dominant 25-16 first-set victory.
In the second set, the Cardinals took control midway behind another ace from Klug and a key block by K. Olson. Kills from Bruchert and support from setters Grattan and Clemens pushed the lead to 13-8. The Cardinals held off a late Piper push to take the set 25-19.
Hunting for a sweep after Rahman's ace and kills from Bruchert and Olson building a lead in the third set, the Pipers did not let up. A service ace from Grattan helped extend a lead to 14-9, but Hamline fought back, eventually stealing the set in extra points 27-25 after a back-and-forth fight and forcing a fourth set.
Saint Mary's responded with poise in the fourth, jumping to an early lead behind K. Olson's offense and another ace from A. Olson. Despite a brief Hamline surge, the Cardinals controlled the rest of the set. Back-to-back aces from K. Olson and a final block by Clemens and Maddie Baker sealed the 25-15 win and the match.
The Cardinals delivered an electrifying performance and will look to carry that momentum into tomorrow's 5:00 p.m. road matchup against Macalester.
