MILAN – History was made Sunday morning in Milan. With a 6–2 victory over Canada in the sled hockey gold-medal game, Team USA captured an unprecedented fifth consecutive Paralympic title, becoming the first hockey program at either the Olympic or Paralympic level to win five straight tournaments.
Playing a role in the historic run was former Saint Mary's men's hockey student-athlete Josh Misiewicz. Skating at right wing for the United States, Misiewicz helped lead Team USA to the program's fifth straight gold medal—his third Paralympic gold after also winning in 2018 and 2022.
Entering Sunday's matchup, Misiewicz had appeared in 99 international para hockey games, recording 50 goals and 79 assists for 129 career points.
The Cardinal alum has represented the United States in two Paralympic Winter Games (gold medals in 2018 and 2022), four World Championships (gold in 2023, 2021, and 2015; silver in 2024), and four Para Hockey Cups (first place in 2023, 2022, 2017, and 2015).
Misiewicz left Saint Mary's after two seasons to join the United States Marine Corps. He served as a machine gunner with the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines in Afghanistan, where he was awarded the Purple Heart for his service.
While on foot patrol, Misiewicz was injured by an improvised explosive device, resulting in the loss of both legs. During his recovery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland, he discovered sled hockey.
Once uncertain if he would ever play the sport he loved again, Misiewicz has since etched his name into the record books as one of Team USA's most decorated Paralympians.
