Cardinals Sweep the Yellowjackets in Doubleheader

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa —  It was a dominant Saturday for the Saint Mary's baseball team (10-6) as they swept the UW-Superior Yellowjackets (9-6) in their doubleheader in Iowa on a beautiful day for some ball.

SMU 5, UWS 0

The Cardinals were in control all game, giving up just four hits while striking out eight over seven innings. Eric Stomberg got the start with the win and set the tone with four scoreless innings, and Brady Patten closed it out with three shutout frames, striking out five to lock things down.

At the plate, Reese Berg paced the offense with three hits, including a double, and an RBI. Drew Rothenberger added a pair of hits and drove in two runs, coming through in a key moment late in the game.

Saint Mary's grabbed the early edge in the second inning. Ryan Csida led things off with a double and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Josh Costello. Later in the inning, Gavin Schulte delivered a single to bring home another run and make it 2–0.

The Cardinals broke it open in the seventh.

Rheis Johnson started the rally with a single, and after a bunt from Gavan Schulte and a hit-by-pitch to Sam Knickerbocker, the bases were loaded. Berg punched a single through the left side to score a run, and Rothenberger followed with a double down the line to bring in two more and stretch the lead.

Defensively, Saint Mary's stayed sharp throughout.

Superior had a few chances with runners on, but couldn't come up with the big hit, as the Cardinals kept them off the board the entire way for the second shutout of the season.

For the final game of the day, the Cardinals used a fast start and steady play to sweep the Yellowjackets.

The Cardinals wasted no time jumping in front, scoring four runs in the opening inning behind a pair of home runs. From there, they stayed in control, backed by a strong outing on the mound from Kasey Carlson and a clean defensive effort with no errors.

Carlson went the distance, scattering five hits while striking out six. UW-Superior pushed across two runs in the sixth, but that was the only real threat as the Cardinals kept things in check.

At the plate, Csida had a big game, blasting two home runs and driving in four runs. His second came in the eighth inning after Dom Najacht singled and stole second, stretching the lead even further. Csida also got things rolling early with a two-run shot in the first.

Saint Mary's built that early cushion with help from a Yellowjackets error that allowed Schulte to reach. Knickerbocker and Berg followed with singles, setting up RBI hits from Stephen Golden and Costello to round out the inning.

Costello added a hit, a run scored, and an RBI, while also making his presence felt defensively with four assists at shortstop. Daniel Sherman was busy at third base as well, finishing with seven assists.

After the Yellowjackets cut into the lead in the sixth, the Cardinals responded by shutting the door, including a key double play to end the inning, and never let the momentum shift.

They look to round off their weekend series in Iowa and go for the series sweep with the weekend finale tomorrow at noon.
