Policies and Procedures

Athletic Training Coverage Guidelines:

In-Season and Non-Traditional Coverage
Our primary goal is to provide care and coverage for in-season athletic sports teams. Out-of-season student-athletes may come in for brief evaluation and referral.

Athletic Training Room Hours
Monday – Friday: 2 p.m. – 7 p.m.
Saturday – Sunday: ½ hour prior to practices to ½ hour post practices.

On game days the athletic training room will open 2 hours prior to competition. The ATC assigned to cover the event will be on-sideline ½ hour prior to the start of competition if the event requires sideline coverage. If multiple events are scheduled the ATC may not be available until the start of competition.

Athletic training room hours are posted on the door of the athletic training facility and are subject to change depending on practice and game schedule changes.

Athletic Training Medical Referrals:
If a student-athlete is referred to a physician, it is the physician’s responsibility to release the athlete back into competition and provide the ATC with appropriate paperwork.  Certified athletic trainers, student assistants, and coaches do not have the medical expertise or authority to clear athletes back into participation against physician orders.  Certified athletic trainers, student assistants, and coaches, that allow student-athletes to participate when it is known to be against physician orders, are putting the student-athlete at risk of further injury.

Concussions:

Sickle Cell Trait:
Student-athletes with sickle cell trait documented on their pre-participation physical, according to NCAA Guideline 3c, should:
* Set their own pace
* Engage in a slow and gradual preseason conditioning regimen to be prepared for sports-specific performance testing and the rigors of competitive intercollegiate athletics
* Build up slowly while training (e.g., paged progressions)
* Use adequate rest and recovery between repetitions, especially during "gassers” and intense station or “mat” drills
* Not be urged to perform all-out exertion of any kind beyond two to three minutes without a breather
* Be excused from performance tests such as serial sprints or timed mile runs, especially if these are not normal sport activities
* Stop activity immediately upon struggling or experiencing symptoms such as muscle pain, abnormal weakness, undue fatigue or breathlessness
* Stay well hydrated at all times, especially in hot and humid conditions
* Maintain proper asthma management
* Refrain from extreme exercise during acute illness, if feeling ill, or while experiencing a fever
* Access supplemental oxygen at altitude as needed
* Seek prompt medical care when experiencing unusual distress
