Jeff Halberg is the head men's and women's tennis coach at Saint Mary's University of Minnesota, a position he has held since the beginning of the 1997-98 academic school year. Having worked full time as a tennis teaching professional for nine years prior to his appointment at SMU, coach Halberg has had his USPTA Professional 1 certification since 1994. He added his PTR Professional certification in the spring of 2006. In addition to his tennis duties, Coach Halberg is the Assistant Coach of the Women’s Soccer Team. He also taught English Composition at SMU for six years.
Before coming to Saint Mary’s, Halberg spent nine years as a full time tennis teaching professional, working at the St. Cloud Tennis Center for one year and as Head Tennis Professional at St. T’s Tennis & Sports in Winona for eight years (a private club at the time, St. T’s has since been purchased by Saint Mary’s and serves as their home courts). Halberg also served as head boys and girls tennis coach at Winona Cotter High School, head women’s tennis coach at Winona State University, and head women’s tennis coach at the College of Saint Benedict. He has coached three high school state champions and over two dozen high school all-conference players; at the collegiate level he has coached six NSIC all-conference players, two MIAC doubles champions, eight MIAC all-conference players, and the 2005 Arthur Ashe Award winner. Â
Halberg completed his undergraduate degree at St. Olaf College in 1988 with a major in English. He completed his master’s degree in English from St. Cloud State University in 1993. Halberg has also worked in the study abroad field for over two years, having worked as Assistant Director of St. Olaf’s Interim in Ireland, and as Assistant Resident Director of the Center for British Studies through St. Cloud State University, based in Alnwick, Northumberland, United Kingdom. Using this experience, he has since led four athletic tours for the tennis and soccer teams to England and Ireland.
Halberg and his wife, Jennifer, have been married for 16 years. They have two sons, Mitchel (11) and Lance (6).
