Matt Johnson

Johnson is the head men's and women's golf coach at Saint Mary's University of Minnesota, a position he has held since the 2014-15 academic school year.

Along with his head coaching duties, Johnson will also serve as the assitant men's basketball coach.

Prior to his arrival at Saint Mary's, Johnson spent four years as the head coach of both golf programs at Hibbing Community College, recruiting and coaching one MCAC and Region XIII champion, not to mention three national tournament qualifiers.

"I'm very fortunate and appreciative of Nikki Fennern and Brother William for providing me with this opportunity," said Johnson, who along with his head golf position, also spent seven years as Hibbing's men's basketball coach, where he was named MCAC Coach of the Year in 2012, and coached the team to MCAC and NJCAA Region XIII Tournament appearances in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013. "It's an exciting time for me and my family, we are all very happy. We are very excited to become a member of the Saint Mary's and Winona community. I can't wait to get started and continue building on the positive upswing happening within the program.

"Coming from the Junior College level, the most exciting aspect, for me as a coach, is to be able to coach our student-athletes for 4 years — to have two additional years to build a relationship with them and watch them grow on and off of the course," Johnson added. "I think my experiences in collegiate athletics and beyond will allow me to coach and mentor our student-athletes to get the most out of themselves.  I have been fortunate to have some success with both the golf and basketball programs I have led - it all comes down to surrounding the program with quality people - class acts on and of the field of competition - and then to push them to do everything in their power to keep making strides at becoming better in all facets of our lives."
