WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University volleyball team posted its sixth straight victory Saturday afternoon, rolling past Augsburg 15-5, 15-5, 15-9 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match.
The Cardinals, who remain tied with St. Olaf atop the MIAC standings with an 8-1 record, were led by
Diane Wood (Los Alamos, N.M.) and
Shelley Haake (Carroll, Iowa), who collected 10 and eight kills, respectively. Haake also boasted a team-leading .467 attack percentage, while Wood finished at .444.
"I was nervous coming into this match," admitted SMU coach
Mike Lester, whose team was coming off a hard-fought 3-1 win over Bethel the night before. "It's been a draining week - having to play Macalester and Bethel, both teams at the top of the conference standings when the week started - and I was worried we wouldn't come out focused (against Augsburg).
The Cardinals put their third-year coach at ease early, taking control from the start en route to their 21st overall win of the season.
Leslie Nicholls (Hastings, Minn.) and
Aimee Taillefer (Bloomington, Minn.) each finished with three service aces, whle
Amber Rajtora (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) had 25 assists.
The Cardinals return to action Wednesday, playing host to Carleton in an MIAC match at the SMU gym.
