Game Summary
MENOMONIE, Wis. — Al Schumacher (Oakdale, Minn.) scored the first two goals of his collegiate career and the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team erupted for a season-high seven goals en route to a 7-5 nonconference victory over UW-Stout Saturday evening.
Rebounding from a 5-2 loss to UW-River Falls on Friday, the Cardinals rallied from a 4-2 second-period deficit to earn their third win in six games this season (3-2-1).
Schumacher opened the scoring at 2:55 of the first period and SMU got another first-period goal by Jason Fillipp (Fox River Grove, Ill.) as the Cardinals grabbed a 2-1 lead after the first 20 minutes. Stout rallied for three goals in the first seven minutes of the second period to take a 4-2 advantage. Denny O'Connor (Roseville, Minn.) cut the Blue Devils' lead to one at the 9:10 mark, but Stout regained its two-goal lead two minutes later. The Cardinals knotted the game late in the second period, getting back-to-back goals from Lenny Hofmann (Sartell, Minn.) and Schumacher in the period's final 1:45.
Colin Emans (Hutchinson, Minn.) and Josh Knudtson (Austin, Minn.) rounded out the SMU scoring with third-period tallies. Dan Byron (Edina, Minn.) picked up the win in goal, stopping 31 of the Blue Devils' 36 shots on goal.
