WINONA, Minn. — Seven different players scored goals as the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team won its fourth straight game, beating Marian 7-4 Friday evening to complete the two-game nonconference sweep of the visiting Sabres.
The Cardinals spotted Marian (3-7-3) a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the opening period, but a goal by SMU's Todd Hangge (Rochester, Minn.) at the 17:44 mark enabled the Cardinals to take a 1-1 tie into the locker room after the first 20 minutes.
Lenny Hofmann (Sartell, Minn.), Jason Fillipp (Fox River Grove, Ill.) and Denny O'Connor (Roseville, Minn.) each netted second-period goals for the Carrdinals and SMU pushed that advantage to 6-1 wiht early third-period tallies by Ryan Stinson (Winona, Minn.) and Nick Meeker (Rochester, Minn.), who goal was the first of his collegiate career. Mark Gryniewski (Shoreview, Minn.) also racked up the first goal of his SMU career in the third period, while Marian made things interesting with three goals in the game's final six minutes.
Eric Richardson (Skokie, Ill.) picked up the win in goal for the second straight night, finishing with 21 saves.
The Cardinals, who improved to 6-2-1 overall, return to action Friday evening, playing host to St. Norbert in a 7:05 p.m. nonconference game.
