Game Summary
WINONA, Minn. —
Missy Westergren (Lonsdale, Minn.) and
Tennie McCabe (Rochester, Minn.) both scored two goals as the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team completed its nonconference sweep of
UW-Stevens Point with a
5-1 win Friday evening at the SMU Ice Arena.
Kendall French (Carbondale, Colo.) opened the scoring for SMU at the 10:27 mark of the first period, then the Cardinals turned the offense over the Westergren and McCabe. Westergren sandwiched her two goals around back-to-back goals by McCabe — one midway through the first period and the other a minute into the second — as the Cardinals won for the third straight game.
Missie Meemken (St. Cloud, Minn.) saw her bid for a shutout fall three minutes short as the Pointers finally solved the Cardinals' sophomore goalie at the 17:13 mark of the third period. After not facing a shot in the first period, Meemken finished with 16 saves, while Stevens Point goalie Diane Sawyer stopped 46 of the Cardinals' 51 shots on goal.
The Cardinals return to MIAC play next weekend, traveling to
Augsburg for a 2 p.m. game Saturday, before playing host to the Auggies in a 2:05 p.m. game on Sunday.
