Ward nets career-high 29 in win over Oles

Game Summary

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Dusty Ward (Lakeville, Minn.) scored a game- and career-high 29 points and the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team held St. Olaf without a field goal in the five-minute overtime period as SMU rallied from an 18-point second-half deficit to beat the Oles 80-70 in overtime Wednesday evening.

Trailing 30-22 at the half, SMU saw its hole get deeper as St. Olaf increased its advantage to 18 points with 11 minutes remaining in regulation. SMU completed its comeback, taking a 61-60 advantage on a 3-pointer by Sam Pociask (Manasha, Wis.) before settling for a 66-66 tie at the end of regulation. In the overtime period, SMU outscored St. Olaf 14-4 to snap a season-opening three-game losing streak.

Along with Ward's 29 points, SMU also got 19 points from Jason Dzick (Duluth, Minn.) and 14 points from Andy Bohnker (Story City, Iowa).

The Cardinals (1-0 MIAC, 1-3 overall) return to action Saturday, playing host to Gustavus in a 3 p.m. MIAC game.
