WINONA, Minn. — St. Norbert scored four unanswered goals, including three in the third period, as the Green Knights handed the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team a 5-1 nonconference setback Friday evening, snapping the Cardinals' four-game winning streak.
After trading goals in skating to a 1-1 first-period tie, St. Norbert broke the game open with an even-strength goal in the second period and a shorthanded and two powerplay goals in the third period.
Brent Kersey opened the scoring for St. Norbert (8-4-1) at the 6:44 mark of the first period, while SMU's Ryan Stinson (Winona, Minn.) netted his team-leading eighth goal with just under two minutes remaining in the period.
Trent Dickson scored the only goal of the second period, while Ryan Nahorniak made it 3-1 with a short-handed tally at the 5:38 mark of the third period. Back-to-back powerplay goals by Chris Bodnar and Shane Dickson closed out the scoring for the Green Knights, who snapped a two-game losing streak with the win.
Eric Richardson (Skokie, Ill.) stopped 27 shots for the Cardinals in losing for just the second time in eight starts.
SMU (6-3-1) returns to action Saturday, playing host to Lake Forest in a 7:05 p.m. nonconference game.
