Gustavus' 2nd-half rally too much for SMU

Game Summary

WINONA, Minn. — Bobby Johnson scored a game-high 27 points as Gustavus rallied from a four-point, 39-35 halftime deficit to beat the Saint Mary's University men's basketball team 73-68 Saturday afternoon at theSMU gym.

The Cardinals shot 63 percent from the field in opening their four-point halftime edge, but managed just 44 percent in the second half, as the Gusties outscored SMU 38-29 in running their season-opening unbeaten streak to seven straight — including three in a row in the MIAC.

Jason Dzick (Duluth, Minn.) and Dusty Ward (Lakeville, Minn.) each scored 20 points in the losing effort for SMU (1-1, 1-4), whle Nick Michaels (Dyer, Ind.) chipped in 12 points.

The Cardinals return to action Wednesday, Jan. 3, when they travel to St. Thomas for a 7:30 p.m. MIAC game.
