Game Summary
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. —
Emily Kearns (Hopkins, Minn.) and
Tennie McCabe (Rochester, Minn.) each scored two goals and added an assist, and the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team used a pair of two-goal outbursts to bury
Augsburg 7-2 in an MIAC game Saturday afternoon.
The Cardinals, who have shared the MIAC regular-season title with Augsburg the last two years, scored twice in the first period, three times in the second and twice in the third en route to their third conference win in four games.
Kearns scored both her goals in the first period to stake SMU to a 2-0 advantage.
Sarah Gibbons (Lemont, Ill.) and McCabe scored 46 seconds apart before the second period was even three minutes old to push the lead to 4-0, and
Tasa Kostel (Rochester, Minn.) added her sixth goal of the season at the 11:21 mark as SMU pushed its advantage to 5-0 after two periods.
Augsburg scored two quick goals — 27 seconds apart — early in the third period to cut the Cardinals' lead to 5-2, but back-to-back shorthanded goals from McCabe and
Christy Hicks (Bloomington, Minn.) in a span of 53 seconds sealed the win for the Cardinals (7-3-0 overall).
Missie Meemken (St. Cloud, Minn.) picked up the win in goal for the Cardinals, stopping 35 of the Auggies' 37 shots. SMU finished with 28 shots on goal — including just four in the third period, of which the Cardinals scored twice.
The same two teams square off again Sunday at 2:05 p.m. at the SMU Ice Arena.
