Game Summary

WINONA, Minn. — Justin Bronce scored a pair of goals and St. Olaf used a five-goal second period to shut down the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team 7-5 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at the SMU Ice Arena Friday evening.

The Oles jumped out to a 3-1 first-period lead, with SMU's Todd Hangge (Rochester, Minn.) sandwiching the first of his two goals on the night between goals by St. Olaf's Nick Hanson and Jeff Simison.

The Cardinals cut into the Oles' lead, getting goals from Denny O'Connor (Roseville, Minn.) and Mark Gryniewski (Shoreview, Minn.) a minute apart midway through the second period to make it a 4-3 game. But the Oles responded with three unanswered goals before the period was over to take a commanding 7-3 advantage into the final 20 minutes.

Lenny Hofmann (Sartell, Minn.) and Hangge scored in the third period, but it was not enough as SMU fell to 2-2-1 in the MIAC and 7-6-1 overall.

The same two teams square off again Saturday evening in Northfield, Minn., at 7 p.m.
