Game Summary

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University men's hockey team scored four goals in the third period, but it was not enough to erase an early 5-0 deficit as the Cardinals dropped a 6-5 decision to Bethel Friday evening.

The Cardinals, who saw their winless streak reach four games (0-3-1), spotted the Royals three first-period goals and two more in the first 12 minutes of the second period, before Nick Meeker (Rochester, Minn .) finally put SMU on the board at the 14:18 mark of the second period.

Al Schumacher (Oakdale, Minn.) scored twice and Matt Hangge (Rochester, Minn.) added another as SMU (2-3-2 MIAC, 7-7-2) pulled within one, 5-4, with 10 minutes remaining in regulation. Unfortunately, 22 seconds after Hangge's goal cut the lead to one, Jared Gustafson netted his second of the game to ice the victory. Todd Hangge (Rochester, Minn.) closed out SMU's scoring with a goal with 1:35 remaining.

Eric Richardson (Skokie, Ill.) finished with 26 saves for the Cardinals, while Steve Witkowski recorded 38 saves.

The same two teams square off again Saturday at the SMU Ice Arena.
