Tommies benefit from four-goal first period

Game Summary

WINONA, Minn. — Tony Lawrence scored four goals and assisted on another as St. Thomas used a 4-0 first-period onslaught en route to an 8-4 victory over the Saint Mary's University men's hockey team Friday evening at the SMU Ice Arena.

Lawrence scored twice during the Tommies' four-goal first period, while Ben Stauffer and Gordy Collins also turned on the red light in the opening 20 minutes.

The Cardinals mounted a brief comeback, netting two goals in the first 1:41 of the second period — Al Schumacher (Oakdale, Minn.) got the first 53 seconds into the period and Ryan Stinson (Winona, Minn.) added the second at the 1:41 mark. The Tommies, however, netted three of the next four goals to take a 7-3 advantage into the locker room after two periods.

SMU (2-4-3 MIAC, 7-8-3 overall) again scored quickly as Stinson tallied his second of the game 49 seocnds into the third period, but St. Thomas answered at the 11:14 mark to preserve the four-goal victory.

The Tommies held a 45-40 advantage in shots on goal, with SMU's Dan Byron (Edina, Minn.), who came on in relief of starter Eric Richardson six minutes into the first period, finishing with 32 saves. Brad Moore recorded 36 saves in goal for St. Thomas (6-3-2, 9-8-3).
